The following information is provided from the US Department of Affairs. The original Fort Snelling was established in near the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers. However, it was not until that a permanent post named Fort St.
Anthony was constructed under the supervision of Col. Josiah Snelling. Winfield Scott was so impressed with the conditions at Fort St. Anthony during his first inspection in that he recommended the installation be renamed Fort Snelling. Its original purpose was to keep peace on the western frontier, but in as the frontier moved further west, troops were withdrawn from Fort Snelling. With the outbreak of the Civil War, the fort was reopened and functioned as both an assembly ground and training camp for Minnesota volunteers.
It remained open at the end of the Civil War and continued to be used as a training center. In , the Fort Snelling Military Reservation was deactivated as a post, although it continues to function today as the headquarters for the 88th Army Reserve Command.
Following World War I, as new legislation expanded the eligibility requirements for burial in a national cemetery, the citizens of St. The Sibley Historic Site offers events, seasonal guided tours, and a museum shop. The Coldwater Springs area served as an important crossroads for Native Americans and traders using both the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers for commerce and travel.
During the construction of Fort Snelling U. By , construction of the fort had been completed and soldiers had moved from Coldwater into the fort. The area around the spring, continued to attract traders, Native Americans, and a small village developed that serviced the trade at the site.
The spring also continued to provide water to the new fort and the later Upper Post. The fort initially relied on horse-drawn water wagons and eventually railcars to deliver water from Coldwater Spring up until the s.
By , the fort was expanded under Secretary of War, Alexander Ramsey. Coldwater served as the water source for the Army until the s when the Army turned to the City of Saint Paul to supply water for the fort. The upper post at Fort Snelling will soon be redeveloped into affordable housing. This community, consisting of 26 different buildings, will feature 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 bedroom apartments.
The Upper Post Flats will include amenities such as a pool, club room, business center, fitness center, playground and more.
