After re-reconfirming it was a little obsessive how often they needed to know we were still coming , we arrived and the hostess was cold, unwelcoming and, when she showed us to a table next to a pillar and the service area, did not react well when we declined the table. She told us to go to the bar and wait for the manager.

We told her we were not staying and left. This was not how we expected to be treated at a restaurant with such a reputation and we told our concierge on our return how poorly we were treated. We had a lovely dinner, we walked in off the street due to not being able to get a reservation, but were seating right away.

Food was very good, the service was professional but a little "cold" nice place for a speical event. Good wine list as well.

While I've visited and enjoyed eating at higher end restaurants from time to time, I truly felt gouged when I got the bill at Rockpool. The food prices are exorbitant and while I enjoyed my meal, I left with a really nasty taste in my mouth and would not go back again despite the wonderful ambience and great views over the Yarra River in my hometown.

We had a little hunger and spent dinner at the Rockpool in Melbourne. Looking at the menu and how busy the place was - we got the last table -, they could have treated us with little respect as we only ordered Spaghetti Bolognese and a bottle of Pinot Noir from Tasmania.

However, we got fantastic service, the Spaghetti were really great even for a European The wines are very expensive compared to other venues, but overall it was a great experience. The little hunger went away and we left the Rockpool in thinking that we should go there for a 'big one' next time.
